1982 #1 North Carolina vs #2 Virginia - Regular Season Game - Michael Jordan

Great players and great teams came together on January 9, 1982 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It was undefeated and top ranked North Carolina against undefeated and number two ranked Virginia. The last time the teams met was in the national semifinal game with the Tar heels coming out on top. In that contest Virginia’s 7-foot-4 center Ralph Sampson was held to just nine points. Sampson and the rest of the Cavaliers knew they had to do better to win in Chapel Hill.

North Carolina’s Sam Perkins and James Worthy were anxious to reprise their roles as giant slayers and the addition of precocious freshman "Mike" Jordan only strengthened coach Dean Smith’s team. Sampson gained some redemption with a game high 30 points and 19 rebounds, but the combination of Worthy (17 points, 9 rebounds), Jordan (16 points) and Perkins (12 points) was too much as North Carolina held on to the top spot with a 65 to 60 victory.
